A Brief Rundown of Softeners
People might not be aware on how a water softener actually works. The main work of a water softener is to allow the entree of mineral laden hard water while in the process, soft and clean feeling water will come out without any aftertaste.
Water softener is very important to help avoid clogged water heaters, scale on pipes, sinks, and other metal, improving the cleaning features of the water, and avoiding spotted appliances and dishes. It is no wonder that there are a lot of people that are curious on how a water softener unit actually works. Making sure that a person can easily deal the huge amount of water that is present everyday is one of the benefits if having a water softener unit.
The water softener unit uses a method that is called ion exchange in order to remove the minerals which are dissolved in the hard water, making sure that a cleaner water with no aftertaste is produced. The presence of minerals in water can be a problem to many, these minerals that can be harmful are magnesium, sulfur, calcium, and iron.
The water softener unit will contain a lot of small plastic beads or a matrix that is called a zeolite. The cover of the zeolite is made up of ions of sodium. Every time the water will flow through the zeolite or the small plastic beads, the sodium will swap places with the harmful minerals in the water. This process will result to more sodium present in the water while removing the minerals that are harmful. During a lot of water cleaning process, the sodium ions on the zeolites or the small plastic beads will eventually run out having the need for a regenerating.
The idea of regeneration is an important part on how a water softener unit actually works. You can regenerate back the sodium ions of the zeolite by soaking the small plastic beads in a solution that contains sodium ions. You can actually use a common household salt for the regenaration of the zeolites, a strong salt brine can help regenerate the sodium ions on the small plastic beads or the zeolites. You can flush out the mineral residue and the remaining brine once the small plastic beads or the zeolites of the water softener unit will be regenerated. When there is a need to recharge a water softener unit, a lot of brine can be produced even from a single water softener unit.
But using this method means that the water softener unit will add more salt in the water it will produce. This will be a problem especially to those people who are in a low sodium diet.
